During the celebration of the International Day of Intellectual Property organized on April 26, Dr. Hay Ly Eang, founder and president of Confirel, received from the hands of the Minister of Commerce the national patent issued by the Ministry of Industry for the Kirum infusion.
This national recognition of Dr Hay’s invention by a patent which certifies the detoxifying properties of Kirum infusions and protects both the product’s formula and its manufacturing and preparation methods, comes at a time when this product already benefits from numerous international patents.
A first patent was initially granted to its inventor in 2020 by the French National Institute of Industrial Property, which had officially registered the application in 2017. Steps were then taken to have this patent recognized in other countries. Kirum Herbal Tea is now recognized and protected in around twenty countries including Brazil, Japan, South Korea, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and the European Union. Kirum Herbal Tea is today the first and only Cambodian product to hold an international patent.
“This allows us to enhance our product because it demonstrates that it is a real innovation. Moreover, this patent protects our commercial interests and it promotes the image and heritage of our ancestors because all authentic Khmer products of Confirel constitute their heritage. Moreover, in the near future, we will add a new product to our creations that will represent our nation,” commented Dr. Hay after receiving the patent.
During this same ceremony, he received a certificate recognizing Confirel’s involvement in the promotion of Cambodian PGIs, in particular those of Kampot pepper and palm sugar from Kampong Speu which are the foundations of its ranges.
